FEBRUARY 2010

Judy White

The 2010 calendar of events is well under way.

Congratulations to our members who received awards at the Kiama Show held on the 29th and 30th January especially Margie Chown who was the overall champion. John Downton was the judge and a list of awards is found later in the newsletter.

The Ken Tucker Acrylic Workshop is on the 20th and 21st February and there are still vacancies available.  Please contact- Belinda on 0438 252746 if you would like to participate. The cost is $160 for the 2 days.

The Fire Station Exhibition
commences on Tuesday the 23rd February. Exhibiting artists are required to deliver paintings on Tuesday morning at  12.00 noon.
For further enquiries please ring
Heather Netherclift - 42 322 692  Please be prepared to do "sitting time" during the week for at least 2-3 hours.

Due to lack of numbers we unfortunately had to cancel the trip to the Canberra Exhibition.

The feedback from the Exhibition 2009 has been pleasing, and also,
financially profitable, allowing the purchase of a new "Zip" hot water system for the Coachhouse.  This will ensure a hot cuppa instantly and will be a safer appliance for members to use.

The development of the new lighting system for the 2010 Exhibition is underway. This is a huge investment in the future of Kiama Art Society, and members will be kept informed throughout the process.

The Annual Exhibition dates for 2010 are the 23rd - 31st October The closing date for entries is Friday 25th September 2010

Our thoughts and best wishes are with Ruth Hind this week and we wish her a safe and speedy recovery after her surgery.

You will have noticed our new logo appearing on this newsletter.

We needed a new banner for the Kiama 150th Anniversary Parade and Phillip Cooper designed this most attractive logo.

The committee passed at our last meeting that this design would now be our official logo and be on our membership cards, letterhead and newsletter title page.

PLEIN  AIR  PAINTERS

The Plein Air Painters invite fellow Society Members to join our little group on a Wednesday morning [weather permitting] to enjoy the pleasures of outdoor painting. We select sites with potential and usually continue at the same location for a few Wednesdays.  Outdoor painting will encourage you to “live with” and absorb the subject. We find that this adds so much to the pleasure we gain from our painting. Some of the extra benefits which are often overlooked include the atmosphere which is absorbed from the sounds heard from the adjacent area. Even visuals outside the range of your selected subject can influence your work. We meet at 9.00 am and pack up at 12.00. Location for the day can be obtained by phone.

If you want to come to see us on site before deciding to join you are welcome.

ORRY-KELLY GALLERY NEWS

As of January we have a new exhibition which will be in place until Easter Sunday 4th April. Please come along any Sunday 10am-3pm and enjoy the display.

For those members exhibiting, the Sebel management have recently reinforced their policy that while they take every care to protect the paintings hanging, they will not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.

Kiama is usually very busy over the Easter break and it has been suggested that we have a group of artists working and exhibiting their work on the verandah outside the gallery on Sunday 4th April. If anyone is interested in participating please contact Ruth or Lesley before 21st March ‘10.

We are hoping to extend the display to include sculpture. Are there any sculptors interested in exhibiting?

If you have any queries please ring:

Ken is a full-time established professional practicing artist, who also conducts weekly art classes and weekend workshops for students of all ages, from art beginners to advanced levels. His candid observations of his surrounds allow him to pursue a painterly dialogue of his visions, both in a traditional realist and contemporary impressionistic manner. His works display strength in contrast, created by his skilful use of the elements critical to his compositions, light and tone. Ken's versatility as an artist is evident in the diverseness of the size and subject matter he engages with, whether it is a landscape, a still life or a portrait Ken’s landscape works have for 3 consecutive years, 2006, 07, 08; been selected as finalist in the prestige Mortimore Art Prize. Ken enjoys accepting commissioned works, running workshops, and has paintings hanging in many private collections locally and abroad.

Largely self taught, Ken came to embrace art as a profession later in life, yet remains open to exploring new ideas and techniques.

He has been a finalist in several awards, including the Lexus Mortimore Art Prize, and features in several collections nationally.

PAUL McCARTHY – Capturing the Coast in Oils – Demonstration, 2nd March

Paul works almost 100% plein air, and his work is far from traditional. His understanding of colour and design is exceptional.
Paul’s paintings are vibrant and alive and his sense of colour is exquisite. Paul’s style is uniquely his own. Based on exceptional drawing skills, Paul can simplify forms and use line to hold his work together. He uses colour tonally and encourages the use of non-traditional colour application to portray images.
Paul is a sought-after tutor with decades of experience and a secret ambition to be a stand-up comic. His workshops are alive with laughter, and the camaraderie that develops from this ensures that everyone has a good time while trying to master all the tips that Paul continually gives.
His ability to relate to all levels of student makes his approach to teaching quite unique and ensures that all students are at ease.
http://www.bluebanksia.com/images/newsletters/paul_mccarthy.jpgWhether working in acrylics or oils, Paul teaches how to simplify form and why some sequences of shapes and colours are processed by the brain more comfortably than others. Paul builds your confidence in using colours and textures to create impact and style in your work.
Make sure you take any opportunity to experience a demonstration or  workshop with Paul – no matter what your current level of experience, you will certainly come away learning something new.

Faye Combe – Watercolour Pencils

On the 2nd of February, Faye Combe came to the Kiama Art Society to show us the vast array of Faber-Castell watercolour pencils.
Faye is an established artist who has exhibited at Macquarie University.
Faye presented to us the many ways these pencils can be used by all levels of artists. Her open and friendly manner made this an enjoyable presentation.

We were invited by her to use the pencils and pastels and test out the methods of use that she had talked about.
