PRESIDENTS PERSPECTIVE - FEBRUARY 2009
 |
The big news this month is, a Society team has formed to organise the 2009 annual exhibition at Kiama Leagues Club; the dates are Friday 13 to Sunday 22 November. Convenor is (vice-president) Judy White, assisted by Renée Lever (sponsorships),
Ray Teasdale (finances), Doreen Teasdale (raffles), Chris Anderson, Colleen Behl, Heather Netherclift, Jolanda Noel-Gough, Jan Parkes; with Faye and Len King in a past-team advisory capacity.
Two raffles, where net proceeds are credited to annual exhibition income, are already in place. At our highly successful (see item below) Old Fire Station exhibition this month, we sold tickets in a raffle to be drawn 5th May where first prize is a large charcoal drawing by Bob Millis. The second raffle will be a painting donated by People’s Choice 2008 winner Vivien Tanner, drawn on the final day of the annual exhibition. |
OLD FIRESTATION EXHIBITION
This early February exhibition of members’ work attracted 25 participating artists who filled the Fire Station walls and centre table. Convenor Rosalyn Hanson reports total sales were just shy of $2,300 with nine paintings and numerous craft items sold, including jewellery by Renée Lever.
The exhibition was conducted during the same heatwave which caused the disastrous fires in Victoria, and let me inform you that your Committee has donated $500 of Society money to the Bushfire Appeal.
To the right is Kathryn Eden with her 900 x 900 ceramic Fire Station exhibit Summer made up with numerous broken tiles, glass and dinner-plates, all mounted in grout on a Masonite base. |

Also at the Fire Station exhibition is member Brian Chapman with his smart painting titled Timber Sloop tied to Bollard. Kathryn Eden and Brian Chapman were two of the 25 participating artists at the Society’s early February exhibition at the Old Fire Station Gallery, Terralong St, Kiama.
Society members were also well to the fore in the newly completed Pavilion which housed the Kiama Ag Show in January, with charcoal portraitist Phil Cooper doing active business.
Talking of the Pavilion, we will be back there again with members’ paintings on Monday 16th March to be part of the Seniors Week Expo. Co-ordinator is Rosalyn Hanson. |
INVOLVEMENT with ROSE SOCIETY

The Rose Society will be exhibiting their wares at the Kiama Leagues Club in late October 2009 (which is why we aren’t there at that time with our own annual exhibition) and are also expecting to be installed at the Old Fire Station Gallery over the same period. Illawarra Rose Society president Colin Hollis has proposed Kiama Art Society shares the Firestation 20 - 26 October with his organisation, and we are currently sorting out the financial arrangements with him.
SOCIETY WEBSITE UPDATE
Our very-computer-literate member Edward del Villar (pictured) has taken on the maintenance of our Society website www.kiamaart.org.au.
Edward will upload the Annual Exhibition entry form, as well as the 2009 cultural program.
Thanks go to our previous website maintenance people Carole Johnston (convenor of the Annual Exhibitions in 2005 and 2006) and to Suzanne Warwick who’s been working on the website the last two years. |
