JULY 2009 ARCHIVE
PRESIDENTS PERSPECTIVE - JULY 2009
 |
The Coach House rarely gets a weekday off, and that’s how it should be. A case in point was in mid-July where Kristal del Villar was running her acrylics course on Thursday up to 1’clock, followed immediately by children’s art teacher Roo Guthrie who was keen to instal her students’ end-of-term exhibition for its Friday grand opening which I was happy to attend along with a throng of parents and siblings. Pictured is “student of the term” Luke Mifsud with his mother Belinda Brooks (at left) and children’s art teacher Roo Guthrie, who conducts after-school classes three times a week in the air-conditioned children’s enclave on the ground level at the Coach House. Congratulations Roo; your exhibition is a visual delight and I thank you for your dedication to children’s art. |

150th year of Local Government in Kiama
Your committee has taken up Council’s invitation to our Art Society to play its part in the 150th anniversary celebrations on Sunday 9th August. Four members will carry street-parade pennants depicting local scenes, and students from the Roo Guthrie’s children’s art classes will also participate, some carrying our colourful KAS name banner, and others displaying class artworks.
Art-in-the-Park will be in full swing in Hindmarsh Park that day, and all members who want to display their works for sale should contact convenor Phil Cooper on 4232 4628.
The council is providing a marquee for our talented Ruth Hind to organise a children’s “paint-in”. Ruth will draw the outline of a local scene for the older children to colour-in with paints provided, while younger kids will be given reams of heavy paper on which to paint.
Vice-President Judy White is organising a plein-air outing in Sebel Harbourside’s courtyard, and members with easels who want to join in the fun should ring Judy on 4237 7867.
The street parade takes off in the southern end of the Showground at 10.30 and travels along Terralong St to the war memorial, and then returns to the Showground. All-in-all this is a fun day for the Society and those brave enough to do so may consider dressing-up in 1850’s costume to suit the mood of the anniversary.
Annual General Meeting
Two days after the Street Parade we’ll be conducting our Annual General Meeting at the Coach House at 11.00am. Note the earlier-than-usual time, designed to allow the newly-elected committee to hold its inaugural meeting after a lunch, which the Society will provide.
This is an appropriate moment for me to say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my two years representing your interests as President (and as one of the team which ran the Annual Exhibitions in 2007 and 2008), and I’m confident the newly elected committee will be working hard for the Society as a corporate entity, and for its membership, over the ensuing 12 months. I look forward to seeing a big roll-up at the AGM on Tuesday 11 August at 11.00, followed by lunch.
Demonstrator Reviews
You will have missed Neal Hicking’s monthly reviews in this newsletter, of late. Health matters in the Hicking household have not been the best in the last couple of months, with Neal pretty much confined to his own hearth.
While he has an expectation of getting back to his insightful and entertaining reviews, he is for the moment grounded, and I want to wish our old friends Neal and Lottie (I’ve known them for 43 years) a speedy return to good health. In the meantime Renée Lever’s review of Sue Smalkowski’s watercolour demonstration appears elsewhere in this newsletter.

SUNDAY THE 9TH AUGUST
Join all your fellow Artists on this day and help us to showcase the Kiama Art Society by being part of the crowd helping Kiama Municipal Council celebrate their 150th Birthday
We on the committee feel very much a part of the local community and believe it’s very important to participate in community events when we can. If we want to be taken seriously here where we live and pursue our art, then we think it necessary to put our best foot forward and take this opportunity to promote the Kiama Art Society.
We will be in the parade with Pennants, our name Banner and many of Ruth Gruthie’s art students, hopefully some of us will be in period costume
We are planning two days of Art in the Park, both Saturday 8th as well as the Festival Sunday 9th, when we also have planned a wonderful children’s fun day of painting.
Hopefully on the Sunday there will be a Plein Air art adventure in the courtyard of the Sebel Hotel. (permission pending)
Kiama will be alive on that day, so roll up one and all and join in the fun!
