JUNE 2009 ARCHIVE
PRESIDENTS PERSPECTIVE - JUNE 2009
 |
On Friday 12 June a group of volunteers headed by our hanging expert Sylvia Hawthorne, placed 30 paintings by 30 KAS members in 41/2-star The Sebel Harbourside Kiama Hotel. Or more precisely, in the function areas in the Old Infants School which is an integral part of the hotel complex in the heart of the Kiama Township. It’s opposite School Flat and the harbour, adjacent to Hindmarsh Park and the busy retail strips of Terralong and Collins Streets. Sebel management has named the space we occupy the Orry-Keily Art Gallery in honour of Hollywood costume designer George Orry Kelly, born in Kiama 1897. He moved to New York with the intention of being an actor, eventually becoming involved in costume design for Hollywood films. Orry-Kelly won three Academy Awards, An American in Paris, Cole Porter‘s Les Girls and Some Like 1. Hot. He died in the US in 1964. |
These 30 works remain on display (and for sale) until changeover the second week of September. The Gallery is open to the public when the rooms are not being used for commercial purposes, e.g. conferences. I do hope members will visit the gallery, and possibly patronise the adjacent bistro. It’s a lovely ambience. At right: Jason Cooley, Sebel Kiama’s general manager with Salwa Woodroffe’s oil
painting Stack Island. Mr Cooley has worked closely with us for some weeks to bring the extensive gallery space to fruition.

MORE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTS
Your Society continues to busy itself with community issues this year. We’ve been invited by Kiama Lions Club to participate at the sharp end in a series of art workshops to be staged in February 2010. Discussions with the Lions are at an early stage but I’m hopeful that, although my term as President is coming to an end, the incoming Administration will be in a position to see these negotiations through to a satisfactory conclusion for all the stake- holders. We’ve also been invited to join Kiama Council’s August celebration of its 150th year and we’re encouraging Art-in-the Parkers to tog themselves out in period dress. Perhaps I can persuade some Plein-Air people to set up their easels at the same time. Your committee has agreed to take part in the Anniversary Street Parade, carrying pennants painted with local scenes, and hopefully the children of our art classes will join us. |
WEDNESDAY SOCIAL PAINTING
Our very first DVD/Social Painters/Plein-Air (indoors for inclement weather) all came together on 2’ June. We had about a dozen members present who enjoyed watching two 10-minute DVDs, one on landscapes and the other on the seaside. You’re all invited to come along any Wednesday at any time from 930am. DVDs screen at 12.30. We have the DVDs, videos and art books available in our Library on these Wednesdays. Books are free, Videos are $2 and the DVD’s are $3; the charges allow us to purchase more DVDs to add to our collection.
AGM is on 11 AUGUST
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Coach House Tuesday 11 August at the new starting time of 11.00am. The meeting will be followed by a buffet lunch for all present, after which the newly constituted KAS Committee will hold its inaugural meeting. Nomination form is enclosed herein.
JULY 21 at the OLD FIRE STATION
The Art Society will be running an exhibition week of members works for sale at the Old Fire Station Gallery smack-bang in the middle of Kiama and within spitting distance of the Sebel Harbourside mentioned at left.
In the spirit of member involvement we’ll be returning to the time-honoured style of having exhibitors participate in the daily oversight of this exhibition. And we’ll also return to having a credit card facility to boost sales. There’s a notice about the exhibition details elsewhere in this Newsletter.

Demonstration – 7th July
Sue Smalkowski – Watercolour
Sue Smalkowski lived in the Illawarra all her life and has been a professional artist for many years. Sue has a Diploma in Fine Arts and an Advanced Diploma in Painting. She has been exhibiting in the Illawarra and Sydney over the past 10 years, winning the Painting Prize in the Thirroul Seaside Festival in 2002, a Highly Commended in James Kiwi 2004 Watercolour Prize and Thirroul Seaside in 2004 as well as Highly Commended and Packers Prize in the Norvill Landscape Art Prize 2006 along with many others.

Sue said of her painting, ‘Face of the Escarpment’ –
I do not want to copy nature, instead I want to play with the natural forms and colour to create my own landscape. By doing this I believe I can express my true feelings and compliment nature rather than merely reproducing it. Trying to capture the subtle and harmonious relationships between the natural forms.’
‘I like to search for the mood trying not just to represent a scene but to communicate one’s personal feelings or reactions to a subject.’
Come and see Sue demonstrate and enjoy afternoon tea.
Please be seated by 12.45pm ready for a 1.00pm start.

As from 1st July, participation in demonstrations will increase by $2.00, while workshops will be an extra $10 per day on top of members’ price. The new price structure will be –
DEMONSTRATIONS
KAS members [$5.00]
Non-members [$7.00]
WORKSHOPS
An extra $10 per day.
If you have a non-member friend who occasionally joins us for some of our activities, you might like to make them aware of our new fee structure. Also, please make them aware that they are still very welcome to join us. |
