PRESIDENTS PERSPECTIVE - MARCH 2009

Faye King - KAS President

And today’s big news is for those members who have been pressing for an in-town presence for the Society. Your Committee has been exploring the possibilities of display areas within the Sebel Harbourside Hotel complex at the corner of Shoalhaven & Minnamurra Streets, which overlooks School Flat and Black Beach. This complex is within the tourist precinct of Kiama Central.
The Sebel complex surrounds the heritage-listed Infants School which has been the subject of some legal wrangling between its owners and the Council over the provision of Community Space which was negotiated at the time of the Council’s development approvals.
The Sebel management is now committed to the provision of space for display and sale of visual arts and has engaged with the Kiama Art Society to achieve these objectives in the short term.
As I write this, Judy White and I have just had a walk around the Sebel property with general manager Jason Cooley and the outlook for KAS looks excellent. More of this in next month’s issue.
The space offer is for KAS members only and is to be organised via the Committee. If you are interested in the Sebel proposal, you may care to send your request and CV to me: Faye King, President, KAS, PO Box 707, Kiama 2533.

RAFFLES for KAS ANNUAL EXHIBITION

There are two raffles associated with this year’s Kiama Art Exhibition, the first of which has been in progress for a month, and for which tickets will be available at the late March plein-air exhibition at the Old Fire Station Gallery. This first raffle major prize is a large charcoal still life by Bob Millis of Goulburn, pictured below. Second prize, a very detailed print from a Mavis Turner pen and ink drawing of a Moreton Bay Fig. Third prize, two nights off-season Thredbo Village accommodation donated by Kiama Ski Club. Tickets are $2 each, or 3 for $5. Drawn at Coach House 5 May on conclusion of Renée Lever’s product demonstration.
Second raffle (starting May) major prize will be a Vivien Turner painting. Can’t wait to see it! All net proceeds from raffle sales are credited first to the Annual Exhibition account and thence to other Society deserving activities as they arise.

DEMONSTRATIONS & WORKSHOPS

Our next demonstrator is award-winning KAS member Salwa Woodroffe who will address the issues of placing figures in the landscape. That will be on Tuesday 7 April 1.00pm at the Coach House. Philip Cooper, our March demonstrator and KAS stalwart set a high standard with his charcoal portrait of Treasurer Ray Teasdale who was heard to remark Phil has made him 10 years younger and 10kg lighter. You be the judge. Below is a link to read an article about Phillip Cooper's recent demonstration.
