SEPTEMBER 2009 ARCHIVE
SEPTEMBER 2009
Blink and another month has passed, with the new committee settling down to business.
ORRY KELLY GALLERY.
Last week, Lesley, Ruth, Renee and I had a meeting with Michael Forsythe at Kiama Council to nut out the parameters and options available for the Orry Kelly Gallery. The following day, Jason Cooley, GM of the Sebel, attended our committee meeting.
As a result, hanging space has been confirmed, directional advertising will be in place and we will open on SUNDAY, 11th October.
Please ring Lesley Hetherington on 42332708 for further information and tell her if you are available to go on the roster .
THE ROSE SHOW EXHIBITION AT THE OLD FIRE STATION:
20th -25th OCTOBER
Daisy the cow will be ‘in the Pink’. Belinda Brooks is the contact 0438252746, and would like your rose and floral paintings before 9am Tues 20th Oct. for hanging. A sitting roster will also be needed, so volunteers are being called for.
Entries are coming in for the ANNUAL EXHIBITION.
A DIARY of times, dates and activities in the week leading up to, and including sitting during the Exhibition, has been included in this newsletter. A few hours of your valuable time will be most welcome. See what you can do and contact me on 42377867 or email justjude62@bigpond.com .
EVERY WEDNESDAY AT THE COACH HOUSE 9.30 -3pm:
Feel like some company? At a loose end? A social day of painting with Belinda and Dawn Brooks could be the answer. Just turn up with your paints and a sandwich.
Jamberoo Social Art Group is supporting the local Red Cross with an exhibition of paintings 3rd-5th Oct. at the Jamberoo Bowling Club. Opening night is Friday 2nd Oct. You’re welcome to come along.
Malcolm Carver’s Watercolour demonstration was excellent. We had an attendance of 29 to witness, and participate in, a delightful and humorous presentation. Compliments to Gail Young for a super afternoon tea (a chef in her past life)
Art in the Park last Sunday: a beautiful day, with Kerrie Suttonberg and Philip Cooper active with brush and pencil.
This is a great society with a wonderful spectrum of artists. We are most fortunate to be able to enjoy the company of like-minded people, a non-competitive ambience, the thrill of a sale and the opportunities to learn more. Quite a palette!
Keep painting .

The new committee for 2009-2010:
The following people were elected to office at the A.G.M held 11th August.
THE COMMITTEE
O give me your pity, I’m on a Committee,
Which means that from morning ‘til night
We attend, and amend, contend and defend
Without a conclusion in sight.
We confer and concur, we defer and demur
And reiterate all of our thoughts.
We revise the agenda and frequent addenda
And consider a load of reports.
We compose and propose, we suppose and oppose
And the points of procedure are fun
But though various notions are brought up in motions
There’s terribly little gets done.
We resolve and absolve, but we never dissolve,
Since there’s always so much to discuss
It would be a shattering pity to end our Committee
Where else could one make such a fuss?

Malcolm Carver Demonstration - Watercolour
Malcolm Carver captivated his audience with his water colour demonstration
Malcolm started with a brief insight of his life and travel as an architect and artist which he recorded in sketch book diaries.

He started his demo painting with a tonal sketch indicating the lights and darks, then a detailed sketch of the scene with the white highlights masked out. With a style of his own he painted by mixing pigment on the paper which he said produced a painting with fresh bright colours. The sky was left to last to maintain the light tone of the sky. If the sky is too dark then the tones are set too dark on the whole painting. The direction of the light is noted and evident from the very early stages of blocking in.

Malcom said while placing in the darks, it is most important to have a balance of soft and hard edges. Malcolm had several rules of which a few come to mind.- Keep it simple (KISS principle) –Use the same materials.(you know how they behave)-It’s not about colour. It’s about light.-Paint what you see, not what you think you see.
It was a great demonstration. Thank you Malcolm.
We already have several people interested in Malcolm’s workshop in 2010. If you have not contacted me and wish to be a part of this workshop call me on 4261 6382

MEMBERS’ NEWS :
Meroogal Woman’s Art Prize
Congratulations to three of our members who were hung in this exhibition, with Kerry Suttonberg gaining a Highly Commended.
Colleen Behl’s work, ‘Layers and Pages’, was mixed media with a lot of paper collage using old books.
Belinda Brooks’ work, entitled ’Flourishing Ideas’, was a mixed media collage. The work examined book burning and censorship, with flowers fashioned from old book pages and then singed.
Kerry Suttonberg says of her entry-
‘I was pleased to have gained a Highly Commended in the Meroogal Woman’s Art Prize for my work , ’The Getting of Wisdom’. It’s a series of 20 small mixed media (oil paint and collage) on colour paint samples. I explored the delight that books and reading have given us. No matter how young or old we are, books have the ability to enrich our lives. I want my work to be like a good book. The more the viewer explores it, the more to be discovered.
Paintings at the Berry Hotel by Kerry Suttonberg and Reiko Hashimoto
My work is on display at the Berry Hotel up until October 15th as part of a two- man show. My work titled ’ Forest Remnants’, looks at what remains of the forests that once dominated the coastal strip and the slopes of the escarpment .My pictures are about the bits that got away. My fellow artist at the Berry Hotel is Reiko Hashimoto.
In Reiko’s theme, ‘ A Moment of Truth’, she explores the body language and expressions of ordinary people She attempts to discover what’s behind these faces.
At the OLD FIRE STATION:
Our congratulations to Ros Hanson and Eta Sega for their successful exhibitions held over the last month.
Suzanne Warwick’s exhibition starts on the 30th September and
Eva Illyes will be there from the 13th October to the 18th October.

Congratulations also to Vivien Tanner for a most successful exhibition in Bungendore, where she sold many paintings, one even as she was unloading it from the car boot !!!
As a result of this show, Vivien has been invited to exhibit at a gallery in the Rocks.
Vivien’s beautiful painting, which she so generously donated for 1st Prize in our raffle, certainly was a crowd stopper during the 150th Celebrations and at Art in the Park last Sunday. We sold near to $500 worth of tickets.
Australian Artist Magazine.
Eva Illyes and Salwa Woodroffe both had articles published in this magazine.
Congratulations to you both. |
Congratulations!
Our congratulations to Maggie Paterson who has been granted Life Membership of Kiama Art Society for her many years of active participation and the valuable contribution Maggie has made over these years..
Maggie received her badge from former President, Faye King at the September Demonstration.

ORRY-KELLY GALLERY.
Our participation in the creation of the Orry-Kelly Gallery gives all our members the opportunity to display their work in a heritage space open to a large number of local residents and visitors.
It is hoped this will not only showcase our talents but also raise awareness and interest in the many and varied programs offered by the Art Society.
Following recent meetings with Council and The Sebel, it has been decided, commencing 11th October, to open the gallery to the public each Sunday between 10am and 3pm.
While we have been offered the gallery free of charge, we will be asking the exhibiting artists to assist by sitting during opening hours. The proposed 3- month rotation of the exhibition would require each artist to sit only once per quarter.
As the gallery gains momentum, it could become another venue for artists to gather for painting and sketching. This exciting venture needs your enthusiastic support.
