New Classes
Kerry Suttonberg’s Summer Classes
for 2012
I have two classes
planned for early next year.
Back to Basics Drawing Class
This course is
designed for those of you who are just beginning as well as those who would
like to improve your skills in drawing. But the course is looking at the
elements and principles of design that are essential to successful art works.
We sometimes
underestimate the importance drawing can play in our artistic development.
Hopefully those with experience can rediscover the simple pleasure of using a
lead pencil. Some may never have worked in charcoal or pen and ink. The subject
matter will be simple and varied. In this course the results will be of less
importance than the journey.
All materials
apart from an A3 drawing book will be included.
The 8 week course will cost $200.
Class begins on Thursday 9th
February and will go till March 27th 2012.
The class will commence at 9am and
go till 12 noon.
Print Making - Local Environment
This course
will be similar to the previous Body of Work classes where we explored a
variety of materials. However this class will have an emphasis on print
making.
Obviously print making is a way to
reproduce an image so that the artist can
sell a work over and over again. But it originally was a way to communicate
information, first through symbols and later through images and the printed
word. What I like about print making is the results. When the first print comes
off the press it can be better or worse than expected but there is always an
element of chance that makes it fun.
Our drawing
will be used to organize our ideas. If time permits we‘ll have a try at lino printing, mono printing, screen
printing with procion dyes ( see
Bobby and Ruth above), collagraphs
and dry point etching.
I’m
anticipating that most members who decide to give
this course a go will have little to no experience. However, if you have
dabbled in print making before, this course will be a good way for you to
rediscover some of the techniques and learn some new skills. Those of you who
have never printed before should find it lots of fun developing new skills.
The theme of
this course will be our local area so if you‘d like to give this course a try
it would be useful to take some photos of our beautiful South Coast over the
summer break. All materials, apart from an A3 drawing book will be provided.
The 8 week course will cost $200.
Begins Thursday February 9th to March 27th at 1.30 pm to 4.30
pm.

“Creative Tension”: Painting and Drawing
Class - Paula Gowans
Drawing and painting are
inseparable activities for many artists. These classes give you tools for using
drawing skills and techniques to advance your painting projects and for
creating “painterly” drawings. Contemporary drawing practice includes collage,
constructions, and even photography. We will explore some of the possibilities
of these combinations through examples and in-class exercises. The emphasis
will be on the traditional drawing skills of observation, accuracy, and
mark-making as appropriate to the goals of your project. This is a course to
hone skills and generate ideas for larger projects; it is not expected that you
will be able to finish a painting or drawing in class time. Oil painters should
use odourless solvent and take it home with them for disposal, as well as
taking brushes home to clean.
For the first session, bring
a visual diary and/or an old book or magazine you feel comfortable drawing, writing,
and painting in (it will become an “artist’s book”). You will be using your own
materials, although I will have some essential supplies on hand. A list of
items for your basic painting and drawing kits can be discussed in the first
session.
Class begins 8th February and runs until and including 14th March ( 6 classes) on Wednesday afternoon
from 1 to 4.
Cost is $200 per person (limited to 5 participants).

Julie MacLachlan - The Harbour
The HarbourAn 8 week art course by Julie MacLachlan, commencing on
Thursday October 20"' and going till December 8th .
Kiama Harbour and lighthouse will be used as inspiration for this course. lt
aims to extend and challenge students of all skill levels. We‘ll explore the
possibilities of Kiama Harbour as the starting point for our art by
experimenting with charcoal and wash.
Students will also explore semi- abstract painting as well as having a go
at illustrating a poem, or story, about the sea. Finally, students will attempt a
mixed media abstract work.
I’ve been an art teacher and artist for most of my life. My aim as a teacher is to extend students so that they achieve results beyond their expectations. The course will hopefully offer opportunities to try things they may not have thought possible. Most importantly, I want the course to be
good fun.
Students need an A3 drawing book and a pencil case with the basics.
All else will be provided.
The course will go for 3 % hours each week.

Another exciting term here at the Children’s Art Classes is coming to an end, and yet again, some beautiful creations are heading home with students.
Term 3 has seen activities at the Coach House that have ranged from
charcoal sketching to students creating frames, to finger knitted jewellery making.
The amazing puppets that Catherine undertook with the students in Term Two were on display in Kiama library for the first two weeks of August, and received overwhelming positive feedback from all who saw them.
We are looking forward to seeing all of our students having work entered in the Kiama Art Society Annual Art Exhibition, and encourage everyone to pop into Kiama Leagues Club to view the joy of expression these children can capture on paper. Our encouragement award for this term will be selected by the judges at the exhibition from the students’ entries.
Belinda has returned to teaching at the Coach House, and is loving being back among the happy faces of her class on a Tuesday.
Term 4 will be starting off on Monday 10 October for a ten week term, and will run until 13 December 2011. New students are welcome to join us at any point during the term. Fees are $130 per child per term, and this includes material fees, and a personal sketchbook.
Belinda and Catherine are currently planning an amazing term of fun and
creativity that will culminate in an exhibition of the children’s art in the first week of December. And yes, by special request, there will be Christmas Craft!!!!
Class times for Term 4 are:
Monday 3.30pm to 4.30pm with Catherine
Tuesday 3.30pm to 4.30pm and 5pm to 6pm with Belinda

Puppet Display in Kiama Library
Term 2
These puppets were lovingly created by our
talented team of student puppeteers at the
Kiama Art Society Children’s Art Classes.
The children were thrilled to have their
puppets on display.
Creating art is like embarking on a mystical adventure. Who would have thought that Izzy’s crumpled ball of newspaper would transform into Julia Gillard?
The children began creating the puppets by listening to an audio book “The Dolls”, which describes a day in the life of a group of dolls. I chose to use a story that was unfamiliar to the children so that they
could illustrate the puppets from their own imaginations without being influenced by another illustrator or filmmaker’s pre-existing interpretation of a character.
