AT THE COACH HOUSE

 KAS Friday Art Group

This year has been a busy one for me. I saw a need within the society for a social group. I had intended to remain with the group for 6 weeks or so and then the group would take over. This wasn’t as easy as it seemed. However, I have enjoyed my Fridays, made friends with some wonderful people and actually managed to produce some of my own art works.

The Friday Social Group was for those members who would like to meet other like- minded people, for those who would enjoy producing art whilst also enjoying the company of others and as a means for us all to learn from each other. The group began in May this year and has continued over the past 6 months. Friday Group wasn’t intended to be a class and I was keen that it evolved naturally. As it stands, we have an average of around 6 or so members turning up each Friday. Some are there socially; others are keen to use the time to catch up on class work from the Thursday art classes. Sometimes we take the opportunity to enjoy lunch together. On a few occasions I arranged a small lesson. Around midday we look at each other’s work. Often members will bring works in from home to get some feedback from the group.

Those who attend the Friday Social Group pay $5 for the day. The majority of the money collected is used to purchase materials for the group with a small amount going to the Art Society for the upkeep of the facilities. I’m usually there at 10am and the group stays till around 2.30 pm. Being a social group, there is no obligation to come each week; you just turn up when you feel like it.

Our last Friday group for the year will be on 25th November.

What’s happening on Fridays in 2012?

There‘ll be some changes for next year on Fridays. The Social Group will continue next year as an afternoon group. Those of you who are interested in coming along next year, the cost will still be $5 and you will be made most welcome.

Friday mornings will rotate four teachers. Each teacher will spend four Friday mornings at the Coach House. The class will go from 9am till 12 noon and cost $20.

The first class is on 10th February.

These classes will be casual In other words, you pay weekly and only attend those classes that interest you. All four teachers,  Kerry Suttonberg, Julie MacLachlan, Paula Gowans and Jeanette Prout, will follow the pattern below -

Lesson 1      Still Life and Interiors

Lesson 2      Landscape and Buildings,

Lesson 3      Figure Compositions and Life                                                    .                     Drawing

Lesson 4      Exploring Method and Media

Those who attend the morning class can continue working into the afternoon’s social group at no extra cost. Students will provide their own materials most of the time and there will be flexibility as to your choice of media and method.

 First Rotation – Kerry Suttonberg

Week  1 (Still Life and Interiors )

We will be  drawing a tea party. I’ll bring along some cakes and tea pots. If you have an interesting tea-set or milk jug, bring it along.

 Week 2 (Landscape and Buildings)

We’ll visit Bonaira Nature Garden, a reserve close to The Coach House, to do some drawings in the shade. Bring along a drawing book and pencil case and a folding chair would be handy.

Week 3     (Figure Composition and Life Drawing.) We will be looking at drapery on a figure. I’ll bring along some charcoals and wash for those of you who would like to give it a go. You’ll need a board and clip to attach your paper.  ..

Week 4     (Methods and Media)

We’ll do a distorted grid on coloured paper, exploring gouache. I’ll bring along materials required  Could you bring along a fine paint brush if you have one?

At around 12 noon each week we’ll have a critique. Those members who would like to have some feedback on their work can drop in at 12. Those attending the Friday afternoon Social Group can also roll up round 12 noon.

There is no obligation to contact me before the commencement date. You’re welcome to simply turn up on the day. However, it would be useful to have some knowledge of numbers. The success of the Friday Social Group and class will of course be reliant on its popularity. If you would like to give the Friday Group a try, please ring me on _
