A two-day trip to the Kirkconnell gallery of the late Reg Campbell

Brian Chapman, a KAS member and former student of the late master painter Reg Campbell, has proposed a group trip to the Kirkconnell gallery-home of this highly regarded impressionist-realist artist.
The Meadows is on a 69-acre property and is now a B&B operated by Reg’s widow Betty-Ann. It contains a gallery of around 150 paintings by Reg, who died last year age 85. The value of the paintings is estimated at $3.5million.
The proposed trip dates are: arrive Monday 20th September leave Wednesday 22nd Accommodation within the home is five double bedrooms, and two more with two single beds each. Tariff is $150 per room per night double, $100 single, which includes continental breakfast.
Kirkconnell is a village just north of the Great Western Highway, about 15 minutes drive west of Lithgow. Side trips to Sunny Corner, Sofala and Bathurst are within easy driving distance. Brian tells us there is a hotel close by which serves lunches and dinners.

Reg Campbell 1923-2008 was a prolific painter, particularly of prominent figures like Don Bradman, Albert Namatjira, Ben Chifley (picture at base of previous column), and Sir Garfield Barwick.
Besides portraits, Reg is also famous for his floral and landscape paintings. At age 75 he won the “Camberwell” gold medal for Giant African Marigolds.
Born in Gladesville, he moved to Kirkconnell to establish his studio-gallery. Many of his paintings hang in Bathurst’s civic buildings, as well as in Oberon and other Central Western towns.
Reg also painted the celebrities of the day, such as TV quiz king Bob Dyer and broadcaster John Laws. These two portraits are in the private collection of Grahame Spurway and hang in his Bathurst Heritage Motel.
One of Reg Campbell’s largest works hangs in the Bathurst Showground pavilion. It is a work commissioned by Bathurst Rotary and depicts all the historic buildings in the showground precinct.
