NEWS
JULY / AUGUST 2010

Another KAS year has passed very quickly, with the Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday, 10th
August at 11am,
3A Farmer St, Kiama.
The Election of the New Committee
Most positions have a nomination in place but if any member wishes to nominate a candidate for a position, please have them in by Friday 6th August by mail to - The Secretary, PO Box 707, Kiama .
I have one request; to see a good turn-up at the Annual General Meeting as a show of support for the past and the incoming committee, who give their time to organise and maintain the status quo.
The membership has now reached 210. The success of any activities is reflected in the support of its members so, I can safely say, the Kiama Art Society is on track .
From the Annual Exhibition last November to this month , thank you to all who attended or contributed in any way. Average attendance at monthly demonstrations has been 30-35 which is very encouraging. The artists selected have been well received and the workshops following the demos have been filled. We will endeavour to maintain the standard and any suggestions for future artists would be followed up if requested by members.
The Fire Station.
A great selection of drawings and paintings by Kerry Suttonberg’s drawing classes provided great interest and some very positive comments. The exhibition showcased the variety of artwork with different media that KAS members produce and the options are endless. If exposure is what you need, 300 people went through the exhibition last Saturday alone. Thank you to Heather for the work and time and your helpers with the organisation and hanging. Check the diary for the next exhibition in August. If you wish to exhibit, ring Heather.
The Annual Exhibition is going according to plan, with all sponsors back on board. Remember closing date for entries is Friday 24th September.
I wish to thank members who have given the committee positive feedback and encouragement throughout the year.
Hoping to see some of you at the AGM.

Looking
Back
This little piece was written by Robert Hellmund in 1987. It was attached to his entry for the exhibition that year called the “Boobs”. His letter was titled, ‘The Painters Plea”, with the view that everyone views art from a different perspective and he wrote of his endeavour to explain his creative process.
He writes, “ When a painting consists of shapes which have such similarities, I call that painting an abstract. To me such a painting is complete when the colours balance, and the shapes reflect a cohesive form of communication.
An Abstract on My Mind.
When one paints an abstract
One knows not where to go
But there is a part in me it seems
That runs the whole damned show
Yellow, green, red and white
On the options go
When one paints in abstract
One knows not where to go
Colour upon colour
Shapes begin to grow
Shadows of a secret thing
It seems begin to grow
There’s a cat , there’s a dog
I wonder what this is
These shadows of a secret thing
Now seems to grow and show
For all the shapes are mingling
As I wonder to and fro.
When one paints an abstract
One knows not where to go
But there is a part in me it seems
That runs the whole damned show
For the language of my deeper mind
Right now,…..is now on show. |
Resale royalty scheme for visual artists commences in June
Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced the introduction of Australia’s first ever resale royalty scheme for visual artists, commencing 9 June 2010. The Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Act 2009 establishes the right for visual artists to receive five per cent of the sale price when works are resold through the art market for $1,000 or more. The right applies to living artists and for a period of 70 years after an artist’s death. “The introduction of the scheme is a great result for artists and their estates – who will for the first time share in the profits made from the resale of their work,” Mr Garrett said. “Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), the Government-appointed collecting society for five years, brings two decades of experience in copyright management to setting up the resale royalty scheme. CAL has already been in contact with over 500 galleries and Indigenous art centres and is running information sessions in every state and territory to ensure that arts professionals understand their obligations under the scheme.” The Resale Royalty Act requires art market professionals to report to CAL on art sales, so that CAL can determine when a resale is payable.

Congratulations Kerry Suttonberg!
Last month I entered my painting, ‘Julie and the Pelican ‘, into the Jervis bay portrait painting completion ‘The Little Archie’. I managed to win the 1st prize of $2000. My painting is of a good friend of mine, also a painter. The best of the Little Archies will be on display at the Shoalhaven Art Centre from 24th July for three weeks.

So - You are a “Painter”.
You are different! Why? You are different because you are a “Painter”.
Your whole life changed when you made that decision to become a “Painter”.
You now see things you didn’t see before. Not only do you see things you didn’t see before, but you now ask yourself how you can paint these things you didn’t see before.
You now see colours you didn’t know existed and you ask yourself; how can you mix these colours you didn’t even know existed.
You now understand that as a “Painter” you have enormous power. You can re-plant a tree, move mountains, make mountains disappear, re-route a river, age a building, put something in that’s not there, leave something out that is there. Is there anything you can’t do?
You can now travel from point A to point B without having to stifle a yawn. Every mile is now interesting and sometimes even exciting.
You can now happily stand out in the cold, in the heat, in the wind, hour after hour and even forget about eating - Why?- Because you are a “Painter”.
You have expanded your horizons. You can now be confused, uncertain, frustrated, excited, amazed, and rewarded over and over again and because you are a “Painter”, you still come back for more.
Yes, you are a “Painter”- there is no turning back - “Once a Painter always a Painter”.

AN UPDATE FROM OLIVIA ALEXANDER.

My trip to Italy and France was wonderful, very exciting.
I got to visit the art exhibition in Bologna and meet the curator, Paola Trevisan. There were 75 international artists besides myself in the show and it received very good reviews from the Italian version of 'Art Journal'.
I brought home a beautiful colour catalogue featuring each artist and their statement.

Paris was beautiful. We stayed a week and visited the Louvre, Orangery, and Musee du Orsay. I also trooped down the road to the original Sennelier shop opened in 1827. It still had the same cabinets and floor to ceiling displays. The assistants were dressed in little white lab coats. I had a great time in
there, thought I was in artist's heaven!. I took so long, that when I went outside, my patient husband was being questioned by two police officers. They were accusing him of loitering! He was trying to explain, in bad French, that he was waiting for his wife in the art supplies shop! I showed them my parcel of goodies, we had a giggle and they let us go! (The trials of being a non-painting partner).

May was a busy month for me. I had an artwork in the Dubai Trade show. It was held next door to the World Trade Centre in Dubai. We stopped over there on our way to Europe. A very different country, but interesting.
My painting, 'Kite Flying', was one of the winners for Best Mixed Media in an international, online competition held by Manhattan Arts International.
Ciao for now
