Kiama Art Society’s Annual Exhibition, held at the Kiama Leagues Club, was a great success, attracting many  well- known artists to participate. The judges were Tim Hardy, President of the Artists' Society of Canberra, and Marijke Gilchrist (Artist)  from Canberra, who complimented the artists on the high standard of entries. Mayor Sandra McCarthy opened the exhibition on Friday night, 14th October. It was attended by 170 visitors for the presentation of awards, with prize money totalling $9,000. News from the Friday Social Group

This year has been a busy one for me. I saw a need within the society for a social group. I had intended to remain with the group for 6 weeks or so and then the group would take over. This wasn’t as easy as it seemed. However, I have enjoyed my Fridays, made friends with some wonderful people and actually managed to produce some of my own art works.

The Friday Social Group was for those members who would like to meet other like- minded people, for those who would enjoy producing art whilst also enjoying the company of others and as a means for us all to learn from each other. The group began in May this year and has continued over the past 6 months. Friday Group wasn’t intended to be a class and I was keen that it evolved naturally. As it stands, we have an average of around 6 or so members turning up each Friday. Some are there socially; others are keen to use the time to catch up on class work from the Thursday art classes. Sometimes we take the opportunity to enjoy lunch together. On a few occasions I arranged a small lesson. Around midday we look at each other’s work. Often members will bring works in from home to get some feedback from the group.

Those who attend the Friday Social Group pay $5 for the day. The majority of the money collected is used to purchase materials for the group with a small amount going to the Art Society for the upkeep of the facilities. I’m usually there at 10am and the group stays till around 2.30 pm. Being a social group, there is no obligation to come each week; you just turn up when you feel like it.

Our last Friday group for the year will be on 25th November.

Farewell to Rae Clarke

Rae Clarke has been a valued and active member of the art society for the couple of years that she’s been with us.  Rae made the important decision to move back to New Zealand after many years living and working in Australia.

The Friday group has enjoyed Rae’s company over this past year and were sorry to see her go. Rae is settling into her

beautiful little cottage in Raglan overlooking the harbour where she’s been busy checking out the local art groups and organizing a work space.

We all wish her well

Friday group members farewell Rae Clarke

What’s happening on Fridays in 2012?

There‘ll be some changes for next year on Fridays. The Social Group will continue next year as an afternoon group. Those of you who are interested in coming along next year, the cost will still be $5 and you will be made most welcome.

Friday mornings will rotate four teachers. Each teacher will spend four Friday mornings at the Coach House. The class will go from 9am till 12 noon and cost $20.

The first class is on 10th February.

These classes will be casual In other words, you pay weekly and only attend those classes that interest you. All four teachers,  Kerry Suttonberg, Julie MacLachlan, Paula Gowans and Jeanette Prout, will follow the pattern below -

Lesson 1      Still Life and Interiors

Lesson 2      Landscape and Buildings,

Lesson 3      Figure Compositions and Life                                                    .                     Drawing

Lesson 4      Exploring Method and Media

Those who attend the morning class can continue working into the afternoon’s social group at no extra cost. Students will provide their own materials most of the time and there will be flexibility as to your choice of media and method.

 First Rotation – Kerry Suttonberg

Week  1 (Still Life and Interiors )

We will be  drawing a tea party. I’ll bring along some cakes and tea pots. If you have an interesting tea-set or milk jug, bring it along.

 Week 2 (Landscape and Buildings)

We’ll visit Bonaira Nature Garden, a reserve close to The Coach House, to do some drawings in the shade. Bring along a drawing book and pencil case and a folding chair would be handy.

Week 3     (Figure Composition and Life Drawing.) We will be looking at drapery on a figure. I’ll bring along some charcoals and wash for those of you who would like to give it a go. You’ll need a board and clip to attach your paper.  ..

Week 4     (Methods and Media)

We’ll do a distorted grid on coloured paper, exploring gouache. I’ll bring along materials required  Could you bring along a fine paint brush if you have one?

At around 12 noon each week we’ll have a critique. Those members who would like to have some feedback on their work can drop in at 12. Those attending the Friday afternoon Social Group can also roll up round 12 noon.

There is no obligation to contact me before the commencement date. You’re welcome to simply turn up on the day. However, it would be useful to have some knowledge of numbers. The success of the Friday Social Group and class will of course be reliant on its popularity. If you would like to give the Friday Group a try, please ring me on _

MEMBERS' NEWS

Exciting News on Classes for 2012

(for more details see Classes)

Kiama Art Society is in the unique position of having a number of its members with art teacher experience. Those of you who have taken advantage, will agree that it would be hard to find comparable courses at such reasonable prices.

Next year will be an exciting year for those of you wishing to extend yourself artistically and there will be something for everyone. Each teacher has a different approach and with art there are many ways of tackling things. There are amongst you those who enjoy what they are doing and are content to go on doing what you love. For those of you who fit into this category, art classes are probably not the way to go. Classes can sometimes take you out of your comforts zone but the rewards can be exciting.

In the time that I’ve been teaching at the art society I‘ve met some wonderful people. Some students were new to the area and the friendships that have developed have made them feel part of the community. A number of those who have come along to the classes or social group have told me that it’s the time in the week when you put all your problems behind you, chat with some nice people and have some fun. Some of those whom I’ve had the pleasure of teaching turned up with little or no experience. For those students the enjoyment is in their sense of accomplishment.

Julie MacLachlan and I are looking forward to continuing to offer classes on Thursdays.

Paula Gowans will be holding a class in term one of next year on Wednesdays and Jeanette Prout has two 8 week courses planned for term two and three on Wednesdays.

On Friday mornings four teachers will rotate classes, each lasting four weeks. The class will be followed in the afternoon by the Friday Social Group.

Gail Rogers Perazzo plans to run a course in pastels as well early next year.

If you are interested in joining any of the classes next year you can either ring the teacher directly or contact me on 42342120.

‘Gina’s Place’ - An Exhibition at Berry Hotel.

 - on display up to December 1st.

My last Body of Work class was inspired by the beautiful property north of Kiama. After taking photos and producing drawings on a perfect spring day, we set

out over the following weeks to turn our photos and drawings into art works.

It was difficult for those who were busy organizing our annual exhibition to find the time, but they did their best and managed to produce some lovely work. My new class members looked like they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The works from this class are on display at Berry Hotel cafe till December 1st 2011. If you get the chance to see the results from this talented group you will be well rewarded.

Don’t forget to check out the small room adjacent to the counter.

Could my class members who are intending to join us at the Xmas party bring along their process diaries. I’d like other members to check out what we have been up to. You can pick your works up at the hotel around 3pm on December 1st. Don’t worry if you can’t make it, I’ll take all works home with me.      Kerry Suttonberg

Olivia Alexander in Paris

(Olivia with her painting that sold on Opening Night.)

I had a wonderful time and the Salon d’Automne exhibition was one of the best contemporary shows I’ve seen.

Normally it is held in the Grand Palais but because it was so large this year they built temporary exhibition halls right along the Champs Elysees.

Opening night was packed with around 1000 people attending. There were artists from France, Japan, Middle East, China and I was the only Aussie!

I have a beautiful catalogue from the exhibition which is about an inch thick. I had two works exhibited and sold one of them, which was fantastic!

I stayed with an artist friend in the suburbs at a place called  Longpont sur Orge and all in all  I had a brilliant time with lots of laughs and challenging moments.
